Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 26, 2026
This policy explains what the WordCatch app for iPhone and iPad (formerly Vocabulary Master, “the app”) does with your information. The app is published by Nikmesoft Company, Ltd. (“Nikmesoft”, “we”). Questions: [email protected].
Version 2.0 is a new edition of the app. Its rules are described below; version 2.1 adds the optional AI Plus subscription; version 1.x is covered at the end.
The short version
- There is no account. Your words, cards and study history stay on your device.
- Translations and pronunciation are made on your device. What you read is not sent to us.
- There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Apart from a short service-status check (see Service status), the app connects to our servers only when you ask AI Plus for feedback.
- With AI Plus (optional subscription, version 2.1 and later), when you ask for feedback on a practice conversation, that conversation is sent to our server and to Anthropic (Claude) to write the feedback. We do not store it. See AI Plus.
- Purchases are handled by Apple; we never see your payment details.
- We do not sell your data.
Version 2.0 and later
Information kept on your device
The words you save, their example sentences and translations, the title and link of the text they came from, your review history and schedule, your lessons (topic, lesson, your answers, dates and streak), your settings and reminders are stored in the app on your device. Text you share to WordCatch from other apps (for example Safari) is saved to the app's inbox on your device, and the home-screen widgets read your progress from the same place. None of this is sent to us. Deleting the app deletes it from the device; copies may remain in backups of the device that you made (for example iCloud or computer backups), which are kept under your backup provider's terms.
You can also export your saved words, lessons and review history as a file and import it again. The file contains everything described above for each word (the word, its part of speech, definition, pronunciation, example sentence, how it was added, translations and language, the title and link of the source, deck, dates, review counts and schedule), each review (rating, mode, date and time taken) and each lesson (day, type, topic and lesson number, the words and reading it used, your first answers, start and finish times, matching-game time). The file is saved where you choose (for example in Files or iCloud Drive), never sent to us.
Camera and photos
If you choose “Scan a page”, iOS asks for permission to use the camera; if you choose “Use a photo”, you pick a single picture in the system photo picker. The English text is recognised on your device by Apple's Vision technology; the camera image and the photo are not saved by the app and are not sent anywhere. The app cannot see the rest of your photo library.
Siri and Shortcuts
The app offers actions for Siri and the Shortcuts app (for example, saving a word). If you use them by voice, your request is handled by Siri under Apple's privacy policy; the app receives only the action and the word, on your device.
Translations and pronunciation
Translations are produced on your device by Apple's Translation framework. The first time you choose a language, iOS may download that language from Apple; the text you translate is not sent to us. Pronunciation uses the English voices installed on your device.
AI features
The features that run on your device use no language model. The only AI feature is the optional AI Plus feedback described below; it uses Anthropic's Claude model and works only when you ask for it.
AI Plus (version 2.1 and later)
AI Plus is an optional subscription. With it, you can ask for feedback on your English after a guided practice conversation. Only when you have AI Plus and ask for feedback, the app sends:
- The conversation you ask feedback on: your answers as you typed them, the other speaker's lines (written by us), the practice scenario, its target words and the language you want the explanations in.
- Your AI Plus purchase as signed by Apple (the transaction record the App Store gives the app: product, transaction identifiers, purchase and expiry dates), so that our server can check that the subscription is active and count your feedback against its limits.
Where it goes and what is kept:
- Our server (nikme-ai.nikmesoft.com, run by Nikmesoft) checks Apple's signature on the purchase, passes the conversation to Anthropic and returns the feedback to the app. It does not store your answers or the feedback: they are processed in memory and are not written to logs or databases. It keeps only a coded (hashed) form of the purchase's transaction identifier with counters of how much feedback was used and what it cost, and a hash of each request so that a retried request is not counted twice. Like any web server, the server in front of it records the IP address, time and address of each request in its standard logs.
- Anthropic (Anthropic, PBC, United States), which provides the Claude model, receives the conversation, the target words, the scenario and the explanation language to write the feedback. It does not receive your IP address, your purchase or any identifier. Under Anthropic's commercial terms, data sent through its API is not used to train its models and is kept for up to 30 days, unless longer retention is needed to enforce its usage policies or required by law. See Anthropic's privacy policy.
How long it is kept. Your answers and the feedback are not stored by us. The coded transaction identifier, the usage counters, the cost records and the request hashes are deleted automatically 90 days after they were last updated; copies in our backups are kept for up to 14 more days (at most 104 days in total). Records of requests refused during an App Store review period are kept for 30 days. A purchase blocked for abuse stays on a block list until we remove it. The server keeps access logs (IP address, time, request) for security and abuse prevention; they are deleted automatically after at most 15 days. Its technical logs contain no IP address and none of your answers, only a shortened coded transaction identifier, token counts and costs; they are kept until they are overwritten or the server is updated. Anthropic keeps API data for up to 30 days, as described above.
Transfer to the United States. Anthropic processes the conversation in the United States. Where data protection law requires it (for example in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland), this transfer is covered by the Standard Contractual Clauses in Anthropic's data processing terms. Our legal basis for this processing is the performance of our contract with you: providing the feedback you ask for as part of your AI Plus subscription.
This data is used only to give you the feedback. We do not use it to identify you or combine it with information about who you are, and it is not used for tracking or advertising. For this reason the app's App Store privacy label lists “Other User Content” and “Purchase History” (used for app functionality, not linked to you), and “Other Diagnostic Data” for the IP address in our server's access logs (used for security, not linked to you). If you do not ask for feedback, none of your sentences are sent.
Service status
To show whether AI Plus is available, the app asks our server for the service status when it opens or returns to the foreground. The request contains the app's name, version and identifier, the version numbers of iOS's networking components, CFNetwork and Darwin (in the standard header iOS adds to every request) and whether it is a test or App Store build. It has no body, no cookies, no device or user identifier and none of your sentences. Like any web server, ours records the IP address, time and address of each request in its standard logs, which are deleted after at most 15 days. This is not used to identify or track you.
Purchases
Premium is a one-time purchase processed by Apple through the App Store. The app reads your purchases from Apple on your device to unlock Premium, including qualifying purchases made in earlier versions. A record that Premium is unlocked is kept in the device's keychain, so Premium keeps working after you reinstall the app; it stays on the device until the device is erased. AI Plus is a subscription processed by Apple that renews automatically until you cancel it in Settings › [your name] › Subscriptions; its signed purchase record is sent to our server only as described in AI Plus. We do not receive your name, Apple Account or payment details.
Reminders
If you turn on study reminders, iOS asks for permission to show notifications. Reminders are scheduled on your device; nothing is sent to us.
Information sent to us
Only what AI Plus sends when you ask for feedback (see AI Plus). Otherwise the app only makes the service-status check described above. It contains no advertising, analytics, crash-reporting or tracking software, and does not use the advertising identifier (IDFA). If you email us, we receive what you choose to write and use it only to answer you.
Version 1.x
Versions before 2.0 (published as Vocabulary Master) are covered by the earlier privacy policy (PDF).
Children
The app is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Your choices
- Delete saved words in the app, or remove your learning data by deleting the app (see above about device backups, exported files and the Premium record in the keychain).
- Turn reminders off in the app or in iOS Settings.
- AI Plus: your sentences are sent only when you ask for feedback. You can cancel the subscription at any time in Settings › [your name] › Subscriptions.
- You can email [email protected] to ask for access to or deletion of AI Plus data, or to object to its use. We do not keep information that identifies you (only a coded transaction identifier), so we usually cannot find the records that belong to you; they are deleted automatically within the periods above. Anthropic receives no identifier either, so we cannot trace the conversations it keeps for up to 30 days back to you. You are still welcome to email us, and we will help as far as we can.
- If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the data protection authority where you live.
- For anything else, you are welcome to email us with any question.
Changes
If a future version of the app changes what is described here, we will update this page and the date above before that version is released.
