Need help with WordCatch? Most questions are answered below. If not, email [email protected] with your device model, iOS version, the app version (shown at the bottom of Settings) and what happened — we read every message.
The answers below describe WordCatch 2.0 for iPhone and iPad (iOS 18 or later). It replaces Vocabulary Master; see Coming from Vocabulary Master.
Catching words
How do I save a word?
Open the text you are reading in WordCatch, tap the word you don't know to see its meaning, translation and pronunciation, then tap Save word. The word keeps the sentence you found it in, so you review it in context. Words that are not in the dictionary can still be saved with their translation.
How do I get text into WordCatch?
- Paste text on the Today tab — from an email, chat or document.
- Share from any app: in Safari, Mail, Notes or Books, select some text, tap Share, then WordCatch. The text waits in the app, ready to read. Select the paragraph before tapping Share: if only a link is shared, there is nothing to read.
- Scan a page: point the camera at printed English.
- Use a photo: pick a picture of printed text.
Text is recognised and translated on your iPhone or iPad; nothing you read is sent anywhere.
Translations don't appear
Choose your language in Settings → Translate into. The first time, iOS downloads that language from Apple; after that, translations work offline. If the download did not finish, open the setting again and tap Download.
Can I save a word with Siri or Shortcuts?
Yes: the Save a Word action looks up an English word and adds it to your words. Start Review opens your reviews.
Reviewing
How do reviews work?
WordCatch brings each word back right before you would forget it. On the Today tab, tap Review … words, try to remember each word, then rate yourself (Again, Hard, Good or Easy); some reviews ask you to type the missing word. Up to 10 new words join your reviews each day, and you can set your Daily goal in Settings.
How do I get reminders?
Settings → Reminders → turn on Daily reminder and choose a time. If nothing arrives, check that notifications for WordCatch are on in the iOS Settings app.
Widgets
Touch and hold the Home Screen, tap Edit → Add Widget, and choose WordCatch: Word of the day shows one of your saved words, Due today shows the reviews waiting and your streak. Small widgets also fit the Lock Screen.
Starter decks
WordCatch includes 12 starter decks of business English words with a clear meaning and an example: Meetings, Email, Job interviews, Business travel, Finance, Sales, Marketing, Projects, Negotiation, Customer service, Presentations and Office life. Open the Words tab → Starter decks, add a deck, and its words join your reviews.
Your words
How do I delete a word?
On the Words tab, swipe left on the word and tap Delete.
Export and import
Settings → Export and import → Export my words saves a JSON file with your words, sentences and review history where you choose (for example Files or iCloud Drive). Import from a file adds what is missing and never deletes anything.
Moving to a new iPhone or iPad
Your words are stored only on your device; there is no account and no sync between devices. To move them, either restore a backup of your old device or use iPhone Quick Start, or export your words on the old device and import the file on the new one. Then tap Restore purchases if you have Premium.
Premium
What is free and what is Premium?
Free forever: looking up and translating words, reviews, widgets, two starter decks (Meetings and Email) and up to 100 words you save yourself (words from starter decks do not count). Premium adds unlimited saved words and all 12 starter decks.
Is it a subscription?
No. Premium is a single one-time purchase that is yours forever — there is nothing to renew or cancel. One purchase works on all your iPhones and iPads signed in with the same Apple Account.
I paid but Premium isn't unlocked
Open Settings and tap Restore purchases, signed in with the Apple Account you bought with. If the purchase is waiting for approval (for example Ask to Buy), Premium unlocks as soon as it is approved. If it still doesn't unlock, email us the date of purchase; please don't include your Apple Account password.
What happens to my words if I go over the free limit?
Nothing is ever deleted. If you have more than 100 of your own words without Premium (for example after an import), the extra words stay in your list, locked, until you unlock Premium.
Coming from Vocabulary Master
WordCatch 2.0 is a new edition of Vocabulary Master. It starts fresh: words and progress from version 1.x are not carried over. If you bought a topic pack in Vocabulary Master, tap Restore purchases: Premium is unlocked at no extra cost. The old “Remove ads” purchase does not include Premium (WordCatch has no ads).
Privacy
WordCatch has no account, no ads and no tracking, and does not connect to our servers. Read the Privacy Policy, the Terms of Use and the credits for the word data.
