Need help with Scanner App: Scan, OCR & Print (formerly Fast Printer)? Most questions are answered below. If not, email [email protected] with your device model, iOS version, printer model (for printing problems) and what happened — we read every message.
The answers below describe version 1.6 of the app. Until version 1.6 is available in the App Store, some features described here (searchable PDFs, Save to Photos, scanning from Control Center or with Siri, ID cards) are not in the app yet; in version 1.4 and earlier the free plan also works differently. You can see your version in the App Store.
Premium
What does Premium add?
Text recognition (OCR): search inside your documents, copying text from your scans and searchable PDFs (iOS 18 and later); folders, merging documents and extracting pages; and printing web pages, labels, ready-to-print templates and ID cards with both sides on one page. Scanning, saving, sharing, saving to Photos and printing your documents and photos are free and unlimited.
How do I restore my purchase?
In the app, tap Settings → Premium, then Restore Purchases on the Premium screen. Make sure you are signed in with the Apple Account you bought with.
I upgraded from version 1.4 and see “We couldn't find your premium purchase”
Tap Restore Purchases while signed in with the Apple Account you used to buy Premium. Your purchase is still there; the app just needs to check it again with Apple. If it still doesn't unlock, email us the date of purchase and the plan — please don't include your password.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad → [your name] → Subscriptions, choose the app's subscription (it may be listed under its former name, Fast Printer), then tap Cancel Subscription. Cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period to avoid the next renewal. Deleting the app does not cancel it.
Documents
Where are my documents stored?
On your device, in the app's own storage. We don't keep a copy on any server, so we can't recover deleted documents. You can keep as many documents as you like for free.
How do I back up my documents?
Export or share a PDF to Files, iCloud Drive, email or any other app. Your documents are also included in your device backup (iCloud Backup, or a backup on your computer in Finder or iTunes), and come back when you restore that backup.
How do I save pages to Photos?
Open a document and choose Save to Photos in the … menu; there you can save all pages or just the current one. Save to Photos is also in the share menu and is the photo button next to a recent document on the Home screen; these save all pages. Each page is added to your photo library as an image, for apps that only accept pictures. It's free. The first time, iOS asks whether the app may add photos; it can only add photos, not see your library. If you declined, allow it in the iOS Settings app → Scanner (on iOS 18 and later: Apps → Scanner) → Photos → Add Photos Only.
Can I search my documents and copy their text?
Yes, with Premium. Text recognition reads every page on your device, so you can find a document by any word printed on it and select and copy its text in the app. On iOS 18 and later, documents saved with Premium also become searchable PDFs, whose text you can find and copy in Files, Mail or any PDF reader. It supports English, Vietnamese, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese and Korean; Korean text can be searched in the app only, and your version of iOS may limit the list.
Printing and scanning
How do I print?
The app prints with Apple's AirPrint. Make sure your printer supports AirPrint, is turned on and is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your iPhone or iPad. Then open a document or photo and tap Print to choose your printer; you can also select several documents and print them at once. Printing your documents and photos is free; web pages, labels, ready-to-print templates and ID cards need Premium.
My printer doesn't show up
Check that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network (not a guest network that isolates devices), restart the printer and try again. Some printers need AirPrint turned on in their own settings.
How do I scan from Control Center or with Siri?
On iOS 18 and later you can add a Scan Document control to Control Center (and to the Lock Screen or the Action Button): in the app, go to Settings → Scan from Control Center for the steps. With Siri, say for example “Scan with Scanner” or “Scan and print with Scanner”; the same actions are in the Shortcuts app. They open the app straight to the camera.
